Dining in Historical Architectures
- 2010-08-15 (日)
- Akasaka | History of Tokyo | Japanese food | Japanese Tradition | Life in Tokyo | Shinjuku
For example in Paris, you will see many cafes and restaurants in architectures built in the 19th century.
However, in Tokyo, the case is different. Not many old architectures are reused in daily life.
Exceptions always exist, though. There are few places where you can dine while feeling the weight of history.
Le Trianon French Restaurant
Restaurant in the old wing of Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka. The old wing was built in 1930 as the mansion of Euimin, crown prince of Korea.
Le Trianon is on the second floor, while there is a bar, Napoleon, on the first floor.

Ogasawara Tei (小笠原邸)
Spanish restaurant in Kawada-cho, Shinjuku-ku.
This Spanish-style mansion was built in 1927 for Court Nagayoshi Ogasawara (小笠原長幹). It is now designated as historical architecture by the Government of Tokyo.

Takemura (竹むら)
While the two restaurants above are rather ‘Western’, Takemura is a more Japanese architecture.
Takemura is a sweets shop & cafe in Kanda, Chiyoda-ku. Its initiation was in 1930, and is also designated as historical architecture by the Government of Tokyo.

Suntory Hall, Tokyo
- 2010-08-11 (水)
- Akasaka | Life in Tokyo

Suntory Hall (サントリーホール) is the most famous concert hall in Tokyo, located in The Ark Hills complex near the U.S. Embassy in the Akasaka district of northern Minato ward.
It was constructed in the late 1970s with its concept “The world’s most beautiful sounds”and opened in October 1986.
It is said that it’s the first building to be created solely for music. Suggestions and advice by world famous conductors and performers were gathered to design the hall.
【The world’s renowned maestro was moved.】
Suntory Hall was deeply associated with the maestro Herbert von Karajan, who recommended the “vineyard configuration” for the concert hall.
The Main Hall is the great vineyard concert hall whereby the audience surrounds the concert floor with all 2006 seats arranged to face the stage in a terraced design.
It makes sounds of music reach all of audience like a shower of sounds.
And also, audience can see performers playing forward, backward or from both sides, so that audience and performers can share dynamic acoustic and visual experiences together.
The maestro said “I was deeply moved by the outstanding sounds and circumstances of the hall.” Suntory Hall makes not only audience but also all performers be satisfied.
【Facilities & Location】
・Main Hall (大ホール)
All 2006 seats are arranged in the vineyard configuration around the concert stage, which is 250㎡ in 21 sections.
In the center rear of the hall, there is a beautiful pipe organ with 74 stops and 5898 pipes.
It is one of the largest pipe organs in the world. In 2009, Barak Obama, who is the U.S. president now, made a speech on the stage.

・Small Hall (小ホール)
In the Small Hall, also called ‘Blue Rose’, all seats are removable and the stage consists of 7 trap sections which can be raised by up to 60 centimeters in 20-centimeter increments. In this hall the audience can come very close to the performers, so that it is possible to create new types of concert performances.
In addition to the halls, there are great facilities such as the foyer, a gift shop and a bar.

・Access
You can get to Suntory Hall by subway, bus or car.
Subway
・Roppongi-icchome St. - Namboku Line(Exit No.3), 5 minutes walk from the station.
・Tameike-sanno St. - Ginza&Namboku Lines(Exit No.13), 7 to 10 minutes walk from the station.
Bus
・Akasaka ARK Hills Stop, Toei Bus #01 between Shibuya and Shimbashi.
Parking

Beer Gardens in Tokyo
- 2010-07-15 (木)
- Akasaka | Ebisu | Events in Tokyo | History of Tokyo | Life in Tokyo | Roppongi | Shibuya
Ebisu is the neighbor area of Shibuya, near Roppongi and Hiroo.
Near by Ebisu Station (Hibiya line, JR Yamanote line) is Yebisu Garden Place(恵比寿ガーデンプレイス): a compound square of shopping, offices, restaurants & cafes.

‘Yebisu’ of Yebisu Garden Place is spelled in an archaic style.
The origin of the place name ‘Ebisu’ or ‘Yebisu’ is Yebisu Beer, a product of the Japan Beer Brewery Company, which built its headquarter in this area.
Yebisu Beer, named for Ebisu(恵比寿), one of the Japanese Seven Gods of Fortune(七福神) which represents agriculture and commerce, was introduced in 1890 by Japan Beer.
In 1901, a train station named Ebisu was built by the company to facilitate distribution of its beer.
The town Ebisu was founded around 1928 as a community developed around the Japan Beer facilities, where Yebisu Garden Place now stands.

Ebisu in 1938.
Japan Beer had been reorganized and was renamed Sapporo Breweries Ltd. in 1964.
After the breweries were moved to Chiba in 1988, the area was redeveloped as the Yebisu Garden Place, which opened to the public in 1994.
Speaking of Beer, there are many beer gardens in Tokyo during the hot and humid summer.
With some casual hors d’oevures, why not enjoy your beer outdoors?

Earth Beat Garden
Location: Roppongi Hills
Period: Jul.23-Aug.29
Time: 17:00-22:00 (12:00-22:00 on Sat-Sun)
Trader Vic’s Outrigger

Time: 10:00-19:00
Starlight Beer Garden
Location: Nihombashi Takashimaya
Period: May26-Sep.6
Time: 16:00-20:00
Also, a new attraction started this year.
In Ginza, there is a bar where you can drink the probably most cold beer in Japan.
Generally, beer is served at about 5C(41F), but here, it is served at -2C(28.4F)!
This might make it easier to survive the hot and humid summer in Tokyo

Extra Cold Bar

Ninja Akasaka, Restaurant in Tokyo
- 2010-06-07 (月)
- Akasaka | Japanese Culture | Life in Tokyo | Roppongi
Have you ever been to Ninja at Akasaka?
This restaurant is quite popular for tourist from abroad, even for young Japanese.
Creative artist repeat coming here.

Iga Ueno at Mie prefecture and Kouga at Shiga prefecture are so famous due to Ninja.
Ninja is one of art of warfare developing in the above area.
Some Japanese visit Kyoto and they have a chance to get wear the Ninja Kimono to take a picture. Some tourist bring back souvenior, Shuriken(手裏剣) or Katana(刀) those are sort of Ninja’s arm.

As you see, they are not familiar with us, of course even with tourist from abroad in a usual life.
This restaurant presents Ninja well evoking to the taste of dishes, visual of dishes, and the interior of the restaurant. They cook Japanese foods by European, Chinese and American style.
There are flexibilities to open the others, not egoistical way of cooking(I think this is important mind to welcome the differencies).
Then this restaurant opened to vegetarian, which situation is not easy to find still now in Japan.

Some of the menus from Ninja.

Participatory way of enjoying addicts you to come back to this restaurant and your friends from abroad can also satisfy Japanese traditional style even they will not go to somewhere traditional area.
I’m not agent of provacateur for this restaurant.
But I would like you to add this restaurant to your list to enjoy at weekend.
This is unique and you can only enjoy around at Roppongi
For more information, check out the official site of Ninja Akasaka.
