Tenugui is a piece of dyed cotton cloth, about the size of 35 cm by 90 cm.  Tenugui means ‘the thing to wipe hand’, and the main use is as a hand towel, but it can be used for anything, such as wrapping, and interior accessories.

Tenugui has been used for more than 1000 years in Japan.  In the Edo period, the variety of designs increased.  Many people designed their own Tenugui, to show their taste.

 

In the left picture is a popular traditional pattern, called Kamawanu.  There was an huge hit of this design in the late Edo period, after a leading Kabuki acter Ichikawa Danjuro Ⅶ (市川団十郎) wore it on his stage.
The motifs are a sickle (鎌, kama), a circle (輪, wa), and a Hiragana (Japanese letter), Nu (ぬ).  Kamawanu means ‘I don’t care’ or ‘never mind’ in Japanese.  The motifs don’t have much meanings on their own, but they act as a word game.

 

Tenugui shops are in shopping centers and major stations.  There are specialized stores, too.
In Daikanyama is a specialized store, whose name is Kamawanu.  You will find Tenugui of more than 200 traditional and modern designs here.  Take time choosing a Tenugui of your taste :)

There are many bus routes in Tokyo, but it might take a lot of nerve to use it for the first time.  Actually, it is easy to take the bus once you get used to it, just like taking it in your mother country.

If you find a bus stop, the bus route and timetable will be written on the pole.  You can check the destination of the bus there.
Hop on the bus.  If you have a Suica or Pasmo (IC cards), you can pay the fee with simply holding it over the sensor.  If you don’t, you can pay by cash, putting in the coins or bill in the box next to the driver.
When the bus approaches to the stop you get off, push the button on the wall or poles, and the bus will stop there.

Toei Bus (都営バス)

The routes of Toei Bus are spread around the 23 wards and Tama.

Hachiko Bus (ハチ公バス)

Bus lines in Shibuya-ku, named from Hachiko, the most famous dog in Japan, whose statue stands in front of Shibuya station.  On the buses are drawings of Hachiko.
There are four lines, running around Yoyogi-uehara, Jingu-mae, Honmachi, and Daikanyama.

Chiibus (ちぃばす)

Bus lines in Minato-ku.  There are 7 routes; Tamachi, Aoyama, Akasaka, Shiba, Azabu, Takanawa, and Shibaura Konan.

There are more bus lines running in a particular ward, such as Edo Bus (江戸バス) in Chuo-ku, and Nakanon (なかのん) in Nakano-ku.  The merits of using these lines are that the fee is cheap (most of them are JPY100 flat price), and there are bus stops close to each other.  Find a route in your neighbor, and make the most of it!

Walking a few minutes from Daikanyama station, you will see a beautiful Japanese garden.  The path in the garden will lead you to an old Japanese house, Former Asakura House (旧朝倉家住宅).

This house was built by Asakura Torajiro (朝倉虎治郎), chairman of the metropolitan assembly, in 1919.  It is one of the representitives of the houses built in the modern ages of Japan.
Floors of all rooms are Tatami mats, and there is a tea ceremony room too.

The details of the rooms are very beautiful, from the floor, windows, to the ceiling.  If you are savvy about Japanese architecture, it may be interesting looking for differences between architectures of the Edo period and the modern years.
