The Metropolitan Government Building is the tallest building among the many landscrapers of Shinjuku, 243 meters tall.  It was the tallest building in Japan when it was built in 1990, until the Yokohama Landmark Tower broke the record in 1993.  Designed by Kenzo Tange (丹下健三), one of the most famous Japanese architect, who designed the National Stadium.
The construction of the building was decided during the bubble boom.  Therefore, this building was sometimes called ‘Tower of Bubble’, in a parody of Tower of Babel.  Despite this bad name, the building is today visited by many tourists.

There are 2 observation decks in the building, the North deck and the South deck.  Except the few days around New Year’s Day, either of the deck are open from 9:30 to 23:00.  You can get a panoramic view of Tokyo, and there are cafes and souvenir shops too.

In the building is Tokyo Tourist Information Center, where you can obtain information and documents for sightseeing in Tokyo.  For all reasons, the Metropolitan Building is a great place to visit if you’re new in Tokyo

Hanazono Shinto Shrine (花園神社) is a Shinto Shrine in Shinjuku, which was founded more than 500 years ago.  It is located in the center of Shinjuku, and is enshrined as the guardian god of Shinjuku since the Edo period.  It is called Hanazono (花園, flower garden) because the site was formerly a flower garden.

Many festivals are held in Hanazono Shinto Shrine, almost every month.  Even when no festival is on, the site is full of people, offering prayers, taking a rest, and meeting someone.  It is a very popular place among the people in Shinjuku.

Another thing famous about Hanazono Shinto Shrine is Hanazono Manju (花園饅頭).  It is a Japanese sweets shop founded in 1834, and moved to Tokyo in 1920.  This shop advocates its own Manju (饅頭, Japanese sweet buns) ‘the most expensive, and the most delicious in Japan’. 
The shop and cafe is right next to Hanazono Shinto Shrine.  One small Manju costs 367 yen, but it surely is delicious!

In the busy city of Shinjuku, there are many bustling restaurants and Izakaya (居酒屋, Japanese style pubs), but once in a while, how about drinking at quiet bars?

Shinjuku Golden Gai (新宿ゴールデン街) is a cluster of moody bars.   It is composed of a network of six narrow alleys, connected by even narrower passageways which are just about wide enough for a single person to pass through.
Many regulars gather up every night, but of course, new comers are welcomed too.

This street is a little similar to Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho (新宿思い出横町), another cluster of bars in Shinjuku.  However, there are big differences.  Omoide Yokocho is typically Japanese, full of Yakitori bars, but Golden Gai is more international.  There are bars whose consepts are Jazz, Russian, flamenco, etc.
Also, there are bars concentrating on music and drama.  In the old days, many cultural figures, such as writers and acters, used to assemble here.

Golden Gai is a pretty quiet area, but not so far from Shinjuku station.  With more than 200 bars, you will surely find your favorite.
