Walking in the crowd from the west exit of Shinjuku station, you will soon see a green and yellow board written ‘思い出横丁 (Omoide Yokocho)’.

Omoide Yokocho (思い出横丁) literally meaning ‘memory alley’, is a narrow street with a cluster of small Yakitori bars, Ramen restaurants, and pubs.  There are about 80 in this small alley.
This street preserves the atmosphere of the 1950s, when the area was a black market and food stalls were abundant.

If you are willing to have cheap beer and dinner, or to experience the typical, traditional small restaurants in Japan, why not visit Omoide Yokocho?  And don’t be satisfied with just one restaurant, go bar-hopping!

【Shinjuku Gyoen】
Shinjuku Gyoen (新宿御苑) was constructed on the site of a private mansion belonging to Lord Naito (内藤氏), a daimyo of the Edo era.
It’s completed in 1906,originally created as a garden for the Imperial Palace.

It was re-designed as a national garden after World WarⅡ and opened to the public.

For example in Paris, you will see many cafes and restaurants in architectures built in the 19th century.
However, in Tokyo, the case is different.  Not many old architectures are reused in daily life.
Exceptions always exist, though.  There are few places where you can dine while feeling the weight of history.

Le Trianon French Restaurant
Restaurant in the old wing of Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka.  The old wing was built in 1930 as the mansion of Euimin, crown prince of Korea.
Le Trianon is on the second floor, while there is a bar, Napoleon, on the first floor.

Ogasawara Tei (小笠原邸)
Spanish restaurant in Kawada-cho, Shinjuku-ku.
This Spanish-style mansion was built in 1927 for Court Nagayoshi Ogasawara (小笠原長幹).  It is now designated as historical architecture by the Government of Tokyo.

Takemura (竹むら)
While the two restaurants above are rather ‘Western’, Takemura is a more Japanese architecture.
Takemura is a sweets shop & cafe in Kanda, Chiyoda-ku.  Its initiation was in 1930, and is also designated as historical architecture by the Government of Tokyo.

One of Tokyo’s most prestigious department stores, Isetan consists of a main building and an adjoining annex, with parking facilities on the 4th to 8th floors of Park City Isetan, a short distance away.
The main Isetan building especially features women’s and men’s wear, babies’and children’s wear, cosmetics, jewelry, household items, living goods and a large food department in the basement. There are fashionable cafes on some floors.
In the annex building are men’s were, sporting goods, and a museum. Isetan is very popular not only among women and young, but also among men and old.
You can get whatever you want and might find something new there.

Shinjuku Miyazaki-kan KONNE (新宿みやざき館KONNE)
Location: Shinjuku
Konne (こんね) means ‘welcome’ in the dialect of Miyazaki prefecture (宮崎県).  Local chicken and Shochu (焼酎, Japanese distilled spirit) are famous.

Ginza Washita Shop (銀座わしたショップ)
Location: Ginza
Washita (わした) is ‘we’ in the dialect of Okinawa Prefecture (沖縄県).  Sweets such as Sata-andagi (さーたーあんだぎー, Okinawan donuts), and tartes using Beniimo (紅芋, purple sweet potatoes) are popular.

Location: Ginza
