Hiroo

A Guide to Living in Hiroo, Japan

Home to a wide variety of English-speaking shops and services, Hiroo is one of the most expat-friendly areas in Tokyo. Located between Ebisu, Shirokane, and Azabujuban, it is a calm and quiet neighborhood, surrounded by other high-class areas. As it is also home to a number of international schools, including Nishimachi and Sacred Heart (with bus stops to other international schools – namely ASIJ, Seisen, and St. Mary’s – as well), it is quite popular among families.

Highlights

  • A comfortable, quiet neighborhood in downtown Tokyo.
  • Expat friendly, great international community.
  • Great amenities available such as supermarkets, restaurants, and hospitals, etc.
  • Many choices for high-end real estate.

Location

Despite its central location, Hiroo has developed into a calm and quiet residential area, unlike its bustling neighbors. Located in between six other upscale districts – Ebisu, Shirokane, Azabu, Roppongi, Omotesando, and Shibuya – it has convenient access to various parts of Tokyo, many within walking distance.

Accessibility

Hiroo is served by the Tokyo Metro rail service provider. Though only one line passes through the area, a number of popular stations can be reached directly.

With Tokyo Metro, you can access the:

Hibiya Line

  • Platform 1: Nakameguro, or Ebisu stations
  • Platform 2: Roppongi, Hibiya, Ginza, Tsukiji, Akihabara, or Ueno stations; and through the Tobu Skytree Line to Tobu-dobutsu-koen station
  • There are also bus lines close to the station that make it very convenient to get around town. Some areas that can be accessed directly include Shibuya, Shirokane, Azabujuban, or Tokyo Tower.

    Things to do in Hiroo

Once you step outside the station, one of the first things you will most likely see is Hiroo Plaza, right at the intersection by Hiroo’s shopping street, lined with local restaurants and cafes. Less than a minute away is Arisugawa Park, complete with koi pond, playground, and national library. And right across the street from Arisugawa Park is the National Azabu supermarket, well-known for its imported items that can be hard to find in other areas of Tokyo.

    Restaurants and Bars

Toward the Nishi-azabu area, Gonpachi is a popular Japanese-style izakaya, known for its old Japanese decor being the inspiration for one of the climactic fight scenes in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, and where former-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi took then-US President George W. Bush during his visit to Japan in 2002. With its tasty grilled skewers, tempura sets, and homemade soba noodles, it is a great spot to grab a meal.

La Jolla is a great Mexican restaurant with generous portions and reasonable prices. Since 1987, it has been providing an authentic experience to both residents and visitors in the Hiroo area.

With a great atmosphere and good service, Burger Mania has 15 different types of mouth-watering burgers with plenty of sides and delicious milkshakes.
