Guide of Azabu – Foreign Embassies & Slopes

South Korea, Australia, France… There are many embassies in Minato-ku, Tokyo, especially around Minami-Azabu. ?There are more than 40 embassies in the Minami-Azabu area. You may have visited Minami-Azabu to make some procedures at the embassy of your country. Many of these embassies were built in this area when Japan opened the country to foreign trade and diplomatic relations, in the mid 19th century. This concentration did not happen by chance. ?There are mainly 2 reasons for this. Firstly, the then Japanese government thought that it would be relatively easy to guard the embassies if they were concentrated in one area. Secondly, there were broad lands waiting to be utilized in Minami-Azabu. ?There used to be many mansions of Daimyo (紊у??, feudal lords in the Edo period) around this area, which were no longer in use. Speaking of Daimyo, in Azabu, there are many places, especially slopes, named after Daimyo. For example, Aoki-zaka(????????, Aoki slope) in the picture above, was named because there used to be the mansion of the Aoki family in the Edo period. ?Today, the Embassy of France stands where the mansion used to be. Walking by the slopes, you will often see signs, on which the […]

Park in Azabu, Tokyo

Mamiana Park (??悟??????)?is located in the up-market suburban district Azabutanukicho, part of the Minato Ward. Mamiana in Japanese means ???Raccoon dog cave??? named after the supposedly once indigenous animal the Tanoki (???, Raccoon-dog). a Tanoki.? Not a photo taken in Mamiana park, though 🙂 To add, the park is surrounded by greenery aptly resembling a ???Raccoon dog cave???, hence the name. Even the atmosphere hints the possibility of Mr. and Mrs. Tanuki popping out any minute from behind a bush to say hello! A Torii (薐ュ??, Shrine gate) in Mamiana Park.? What is interesting is that this shrine honors foxes, which were thought to be the rival of Tanoki in the Japanese folklore. In a city where space is an absolute commodity, the park welcomes relaxation for both adults and children alike, with ample seating and a well-equipped play park all of which are very well maintained. Beside the fact that it is located in central Tokyo, the park is far away enough from hustle and bustle allowing one to put their head down on a park bench without the worries of litter or pollution. Close to the Park is the famed Tokyo Tower merely a stone???s throw away, and […]

Yoyogi Park

Yoyogi Park is one of the Tokyo’s largest open spaces located adjacent to JR Harajuku station and Meiji Shrine; which is the Shinto Shrine that is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Sh??ken. When both Emperor Meiji and Empress Sh??ken had died, the Japanese people wished to pay their respects to the two influential Japanese figures. It was for this reason that Meiji Shrine was constructed and their souls enshrined. The Park is the perfect place for picnicking and sporting activities due to wide lawns, forested areas and ponds. It makes a romantic viewing spot for cherry blossoms during spring even though it has relatively fewer cherry trees than other spots. During autumn it is well known for it???s intense golden glow from the Ginko tree forest. Yoyogi Park is not a manicured Japanese garden, but more of a place for activities??? such as walking your dog. If you do not have a dog, that???s not a problem you can just simply rent one. The Park has a fenced off dog run, one of the very few areas in Tokyo where dogs are allowed to be off the leash. The run is divided into […]
