Roppongi

A Guide to Living in Roppongi, Japan

Roppongi is another international area that has been redeveloped over the years, turning it into a lively district filled with a wealth of entertainment, dining, and shopping options. Though still the go-to for nightlife in Tokyo, it is also home to many expat families, being the choice location of the American School in Japan Early Learning Center and one of the established US military bases.

Highlights

  • In the middle of the affluent neighborhoods of Aoyama, Azabu, Akasaka (also known as the 3As in Japan), and after two large-scale development projects, Roppongi has gentrified into a pleasant living environment.
  • An active, expat friendly area.
  • Lots of greenery nearby, including Midtown Garden, Hinokicho Park, Arisugawa Park, Aoyama Cemetery, Yoyogi Park, Shiba Park, and Meijijingu Gaien.

Location

Between the 3As (as well as Hiroo and Shirokane), Roppongi is a prime location, surrounded by other wealthy communities and expat friendly areas. And seeing that it is the nightlife capital of Japan, there is never a dull moment.

Accessibility

Roppongi is served by two rail service providers, the Tokyo Metro and the Toei Subway. Together, they will take you to many places in Tokyo.

From the Tokyo Metro, you can access the:

Hibiya Line

  • Track 1: Nakameguro station
  • Track 2: Hiroo, Ebisu, Hibiya, Ginza, Tsukiji, Akihabara, Ueno, or Kita-senju stations; and through the Tobu Skytree Line to Tobu-dobutsu-koen station

From the Toei Subway, you can access the:

Oedo Line

  • Platform 1: Daimon, Tsukijishijo, Ryogoku, or Ueno-okachimachi stations
  • Platform 2: Yoyogi, Shinjuku, Tochomae, or Hikarigaoka stations

Buses to Shibuya and Shinagawa are also available near the station, and areas such as Roppongi-itchome and Tokyo Tower are also within walking distance.

Things to do in Hiroo

Due to redevelopment in the mid-2000s, Roppongi now enjoys the benefit of having several complexes as a result, mainly Tokyo Midtown and Roppongi Hills. Both structures bestow passersby with events, entertainment, dining, and shopping options. And for those looking to settle in the area, there is an abundance of residences available as well.

With over 30 restaurants, numerous cafes, and over 60 different types of retail shops in Tokyo Midtown, there is no shortage of things to do. During the summer, there are festivals and events aplenty at Midtown Garden and Hinokicho Park. And during the winter, there are Christmas light shows, complete with ice skating rink.

The Roppongi Hills Arena hosts numerous festivals, such as Belgium Beer Weekend. And inside during the summer they hold a friendly competition, the Roppongi Gourmet Burger Grand Prix, where the 16 restaurants create special, limited-edition burgers for clientele to vote on. Many also stop by the movie theatre to catch the latest blockbuster hit or view the beautiful city skyline from the Rooftop Sky Deck.

If art is more your thing, the National Art Center Tokyo in Roppongi 7-chome is Japan’s largest museum, and within minutes is the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills and Suntory Museum of Art at Tokyo Midtown.

Restaurants and Bars

Tsurutontan is a famous udon noodle chain with one of the shops on the main streets of Roppongi. With a variety of dishes and hefty portions, it is popular to eat after a night out on the town.

Warayakiya is a delicious, local izakaya beloved for its straw-grilled seafood and chicken. With an authentic atmosphere and great sake to boot, it is highly recommended.

Two Dogs is known for its amazing California style Pizza, among other amazing dishes, and for its 25 on-tap craft beers (both Japanese and American). They have friendly, English-speaking staff, and host occasional events.

BrewDog is another fun spot from Scotland that brings 22 of the finest European and Japanese craft beers on tap. With a large selection of board and card games, and a couple of retro video game tables, it is a lively and interactive locale.

For something a little more mellow, Agave has one of the world’s largest collections of mezcal and tequila (over 550 different types!). With its Mexican-inspired interior design, dim lighting, and elegant ambiance, this is one special place to get away and relax.

For those that would rather stay in and cook at home, there are Seijo Ishi, Lincos, and Precce supermarkets in the neighborhood, perfect for finding high-quality ingredients for your next recipe.
